Media and French History
Los Angeles (22-24 mars 2012)

The 58th Annual Society for French Historical Studies conference will be held at the Omni Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, California from Thursday, March 22, through Saturday, March 24, 2012 and will be hosted by the University of Southern California.
The theme for this conference will be « Media and French History. » Featured speakers include film director, producer, screenwriter, and installation artist, Agnès Varda (definitive confirmation pending); Emannuelle Loyer (Sciences Po), Antoine de Baecque (Université Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense), and Dena Goodman (University of Michigan).
Featured events will include a plenary round table on Archives and the Maison de l’Histoire controversy, a plenary session on the work of Agnès Varda, a reception Friday evening at the USC School of Cinema, and a banquet on Saturday evening. Additional outings on Sunday morning will include a walking tour of downtown Los Angeles.
While the theme of the conference is « Media and French History, » the Program Committee welcomes papers and proposals on all subjects. We will make every effort to combine single papers into coherent panels, but we encourage individuals to organize complete panels composed of two or (preferably) three papers, with a chair and commentator. Roundtables and other formats will also be considered. In conjunction with the SFHS Technology Committee, we also welcome proposals for sessions to be webcast, on topics of broad interest.
Please do not send proposals for papers that have already been presented or are scheduled for presentation elsewhere, or that have already been published. All conference participants must be members in good standing of SFHS at the time of the conference.
All sessions will be held at the Omni Hotel and the University of Southern California. The hotel is located in the cultural center of Los Angeles, next door to the Museum of Contemporary Art, one block away from the Performing Arts Center (Walt Disney Concert Hall, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Ahmanson Theatre and Mark Taper Forum) and surrounded by restaurants of all price ranges. The special hotel rate will be $159.00 per night.
For further information, contact Elinor Accampo, President of the SFHS (accampo@usc.edu) or Alyssa Sepinwall, Chair of the Program Committee (sepinwal@csusm.edu). Please send proposals for panels or individual papers as MS-Word attachments to Catherine Clarke (catherec@usc.edu). Proposals should include the following items, integrated into one file: an abstract (no more than 1 page) for each paper; a CV (no more than 1 page) for each presenter, including contact information; and the proposed chair« s and commentator »s names, affiliations, and email addresses.
