Early Modern Women: An Interdisciplinary Journal

Volume 20.1 (Fall 2025)

The editors of Early Modern Women: An Interdisciplinary Journal invite submissions for the Fall 2025 / Volume 20.1 Forum on the topic of Early Modern Women in Wartime.

In keeping with the Journal’s tradition since its third issue (2008), this Forum will comprise short contributions on a single topic by scholars from a variety of disciplines. For Volume 20.1, in acknowledgement of the devastating wars that currently rage in Ukraine, the Middle East, and Sudan, among other places, we seek submissions on gender and wartime in the early modern period. Papers might include examinations of gendered experiences of wartime; material, textual, and visual representations of war as gendered; and research on the intersections of war and gender. We particularly encourage submissions that appeal to readers across disciplinary and national boundaries. Articles may cover literature, history, art history, history of science, music, politics, religion, theater, cultural studies, and any region of the early modern world.

Submissions are due November 15, 2024 and should be 3,500 words including footnotes; essays should follow the EMW Style Guide (https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/pb-assets/docs/journals/emw-style-guide-1620063847753.pdf). Contributions will be peer reviewed.
