This special issue explores little or insufficiently known early modern women and the writings in which they testified to the exceptionality of their vocation. This portrait gallery aims to show not only the important place that various forms of piety occupied in the lives of these understudied women from the sixteenth and seventeenth century, but also and especially the varied means they used to explore their spirituality. How did the confessional ruptures of the period lead them to reflect upon and convey their own experiences of religious conflict, knowledge, and transcendence?
