The Department of Social Sciences of the Universit\u00e0 di Napoli Federico II, the<\/span>Department of Humanities and Social Sciences of the Universit\u00e0 di Napoli<\/span>L’Orientale together with the International collaborative doctoral network in<\/span>Women’s and Gender History will be jointly running the Graduate Conference<\/span>on Gender and Crisis in History, to be held June 22-24, 2015, on the island of<\/span>Procida (Napoli). This conference seeks to bring together history graduate<\/span>students whose original research deal with gender and crisis.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>
<\/div>\n
Whilst the category of \u00ab gender \u00bb has a well-established epistemological status,<\/span>how relational systems have changed historically still poses questions for<\/span>research.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>
<\/div>\n
The social sciences suggest that there are diverse fields in which ? in a given<\/span>context ? gender identities are constructed and identification processes occur.<\/span>These are interrelated yet distinct fields: they range from cultural systems of<\/span>meaning to economic-productive relations; from the intimate personal sphere to<\/span>the legal and institutional dimension in the broad sense.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>
<\/div>\n
<\/span>Historical research shows that the change takes place at different times and<\/span>assumes different forms in these diverse spheres, and that it is not possible to<\/span><\/div>\n
identify ?a transformative event’ in, or a ?crisis’ of, gender relations as a whole.<\/span>Nor do interpretations of modernity in terms of ?permanent crisis’ avoid<\/span>tautology in this regard.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
<\/span>There are nevertheless critical phases, or political, social, cultural or economic<\/span>junctures at which consolidated equilibria and arrangements are put to the tes <\/span>on the terrain of gender relations as well.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>
<\/div>\n
Hence, around a plural and strongly localized notion of ?crisis’, the aim of the<\/span>Conference is to gather current streams of research on different periods and<\/span>geographical contexts, and to encourage discussion among them.<\/span><\/span>We therefore invite papers proposals pertaining to three main lines of inquiry,<\/span>which may also intersect:<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/span>
<\/div>\n
1. how critical phases of change or dramatic ruptures are translated into and\/or<\/span>are accompanied by alterations in the system of gender relations; and, viceversa,<\/span>how gender influences those processes, and what are the gender bases<\/span>of instabilities in, and shocks to, the economic, political, social and\/or<\/span>cultural system;<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>
<\/div>\n
2. whilst a plurality of models usually operate in different contexts, there are<\/span>historical periods in which new ones emerge, and in which forms of<\/span>\u00ab dissidence \u00bb\/provocation implicitly or explicitly challenge established<\/span>equilibria and hierarchies;<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>
<\/div>\n
3. history is strewn with claims of an ongoing ?crisis’ in the relations between<\/span>men and women. The topic to explore is this: in what contexts does this<\/span>happen, within what institutional frameworks, and with what consequences’<\/span>To be noted in particular is the long-standing claim concerning the ?crisis of<\/span>masculinity?, which is so widespread that it renders the category itself<\/span>somewhat inflated in public discourse and in contemporary common-sense.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>
<\/div>\n
<\/span>The language of the Conference will be English.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>
<\/div>\n
The keynote speakers will be Prof Laura Lee Downs (EUI) and Prof Mary<\/span>Gibson (CUNY).<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>
<\/div>\n
Conference presentations should last no longer than 20 minutes. Each<\/span>presentation will be accompanied by comments from a member of the scientific<\/span>committee. Presenter
\ns will have a chance to answer questions during a general<\/span>discussion period after the presentation.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Food and housing will be provided by the organizer institutions. Unfortunately,<\/span>we will not be able to provide funds for transportation.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Please submit proposals (500 word max) and bios (150 words max) in English<\/span>by February 28, 2015 to the following<\/span>e-mail addresses: caglioti@unina.it<\/a> ; rizzod@unior.it<\/a>.<\/span>The Scientific Committee will select 10 participants.<\/span><\/div>\n

Acceptance notices will be sent by March 20, 2015. Between ten and twelve<\/span>papers will be accepted. Accepted papers must be sent in by May 30, 2015.<\/span><\/div>\n
