This conference seeks to bring together history graduate<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">students whose original research deal with gender and crisis.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><br type=\"_moz\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Whilst the category of \u00ab gender \u00bb has a well-established epistemological status,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">how relational systems have changed historically still poses questions for<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">research.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><br type=\"_moz\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The social sciences suggest that there are diverse fields in which ? in a given<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">context ? gender identities are constructed and identification processes occur.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">These are interrelated yet distinct fields: they range from cultural systems of<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">meaning to economic-productive relations; from the intimate personal sphere to<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">the legal and institutional dimension in the broad sense.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><br type=\"_moz\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Historical research shows that the change takes place at different times and<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">assumes different forms in these diverse spheres, and that it is not possible to<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">identify ?a transformative event&#8217; in, or a ?crisis&#8217; of, gender relations as a whole.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Nor do interpretations of modernity in terms of ?permanent crisis&#8217; avoid<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">tautology in this regard.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><br type=\"_moz\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">There are nevertheless critical phases, or political, social, cultural or economic<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">junctures at which consolidated equilibria and arrangements are put to the tes <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">on the terrain of gender relations as well.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><br type=\"_moz\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Hence, around a plural and strongly localized notion of ?crisis&#8217;, the aim of the<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Conference is to gather current streams of research on different periods and<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">geographical contexts, and to encourage discussion among them.<\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We therefore invite papers proposals pertaining to three main lines of inquiry,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">which may also intersect:<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><br type=\"_moz\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">1. how critical phases of change or dramatic ruptures are translated into and\/or<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">are accompanied by alterations in the system of gender relations; and, viceversa,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">how gender influences those processes, and what are the gender bases<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">of instabilities in, and shocks to, the economic, political, social and\/or<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">cultural system;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><br type=\"_moz\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">2. whilst a plurality of models usually operate in different contexts, there are<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">historical periods in which new ones emerge, and in which forms of<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u00ab dissidence \u00bb\/provocation implicitly or explicitly challenge established<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">equilibria and hierarchies;<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><br type=\"_moz\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">3. history is strewn with claims of an ongoing ?crisis&#8217; in the relations between<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">men and women. The topic to explore is this: in what contexts does this<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">happen, within what institutional frameworks, and with what consequences&#8217;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">To be noted in particular is the long-standing claim concerning the ?crisis of<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">masculinity?, which is so widespread that it renders the category itself<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">somewhat inflated in public discourse and in contemporary common-sense.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><br type=\"_moz\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The language of the Conference will be English.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><br type=\"_moz\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The keynote speakers will be Prof Laura Lee Downs (EUI) and Prof Mary<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Gibson (CUNY).<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><br type=\"_moz\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Conference presentations should last no longer than 20 minutes. Each<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">presentation will be accompanied by comments from a member of the scientific<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">committee. Presenter<br \/>\ns will have a chance to answer questions during a general<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">discussion period after the presentation.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><br type=\"_moz\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Food and housing will be provided by the organizer institutions.
