The National University of Ireland, Galway is seeking to fill 5 full-time, fixed-term Postdoctoral Researcher positions for the project \u00ab The Reception and Circulation of Early Modern Women’s Writing, 1550-1700 \u00bb (RECIRC), led by Dr. Marie-Louise Coolahan, Principal Investigator (School of Humanities). The positions are funded by the European Research Council, under the Consolidator Grant Scheme, 2013. The successful candidates will be expected to start on 1st October 2014.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span>Project Description<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/span>The project will produce a large-scale, quantitative analysis of the reception and circulation of women’s writing from 1550 to 1700. The results will enable analysis of how texts, ideas and reputations gained traction in the early modern period. RECIRC is organised in four interlocking work packages to which the postdoctoral positions are allocated: (1) transnational religious networks; (2) the international republic of letters; (3) the manuscript miscellany; and (4) book\/manuscript ownership. The focus includes writers who were read in Ireland and Britain as well as women born and resident in Anglophone countries. The research team will be based in the Moore Institute, now housed in the new, purpose-built Hardiman Research Building.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/strong>Position 1 – Postdoctoral Researcher<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>Contract duration: 1 October, 2014 ? 30 September, 2017 (36 months)<\/span><\/span>

<\/span>This work package will map the transmission and translation of female-authored texts among Franciscan, Jesuit and Benedictine communities across Europe.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span>Work Package 2: The International Republic of Letters ? REF NO: NUIG 38-14<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/span>Position 2 – Postdoctoral Researcher<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>Contract duration: 1 October, 2014 ? 30 September, 2017 (36 months)<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>This work package will analyse the international ?republic of letters’ as the locus for the circulation of texts and ideas by women and their forging of new intellectual networks across Europe.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span>Work Package 3: The Manuscript Miscellany as Instrument of Circulation and Site of Reception ? REF NO: NUIG 39-14<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/span>Positions 3 & 4 – Postdoctoral Researchers<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>Contract duration: 1 October, 2014 ? 30 September, 2018 (48 months)<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>This work package addresses the reception of women’s writing in early modern manuscript culture by focusing on a specific category: the manuscript miscellany. It investigates various modes of manuscript reception, including the compilation, adaptation and excerpting of texts by women.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span>Work Package 4: Transmission Trails and Book Ownership ? REF NO: NUIG 40-14<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/span>Position 5 – Postdoctoral Researcher<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>Contract duration: 1 October, 2014 ? 31 March 2016 (18 months)<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>This work package will map the transmission of women’s texts by focusing on the evidence of early modern library catalogues, patterns of book ownership and authorial attribution.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span>All researchers will work under the direct supervision of Dr. Marie-Louise Coolahan.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>Salary: ?42,394 per annum (public sector pay policy rules pertaining to new entrants will apply)<\/span><\/div>\n
