{"id":2632,"date":"2014-03-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-03-22T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/20746"},"modified":"2014-03-22T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2014-03-22T00:00:00","slug":"revisiting-early-modern-salons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/siefar.org\/gb\/revisiting-early-modern-salons\/","title":{"rendered":"Revisiting Early Modern Salons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"corpsTexte\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Organizers: Anne Larsen and Diana Robin<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"corpsTexte\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"corpsTexte\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We would like to organize a panel on \u00ab Revisiting Early Modern Salons. \u00bb<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"corpsTexte\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"corpsTexte\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The place of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century salons and salon sociabilit\u00e9 in the production of culture has been a topic of renewed interest for literary historians for well over a decade. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"corpsTexte\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"corpsTexte\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">As we and other scholars have begun to take into consideration women&#8217;s leadership and patronage in such contexts, in Italy, France, England, and Spain, the notions about what constitutes women&#8217;s empowerment regarding the production of literary culture, especially, but also their influence on social, political, and religious issues (such as marriage, education, the law, and religious choices) have come under new scrutiny. <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"corpsTexte\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"corpsTexte\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Salon-style sociabilit\u00e9 was already in practice in sixteenth-century Italy (sometimes referred to as ridotti, cenacoli, or veglie) and France (the c\u00e9nacles and other gatherings in the h\u00f4tels particuliers of noble and royal hostesses, as well as coteries and circles in major cities such as Lyon and Poitiers) long before the architectural form and term salon caught up with it in seventeenth-century France. In England the Sidney\/Wroth\/Russell\/Herbert circle exercised a profound influence on sociability.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"corpsTexte\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\" class=\"corpsTexte\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The Sixteenth-Century Studies conference provides the opportunity to examine our contemporary views of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century salon culture in Europe.
