How were life stages demarcated in medieval and early modern societies and how were transitions between them negotiated&#8217; In what ways were the defining acts of birth, sex and death understood and represented in records, rituals, art and literature\u00ab What social and religious factors determined how they were celebrated and regulated, and how were these norms challenged or changed over time? How closely related were the concepts and imagery of birth, sex and death \u00bb<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><br type=\"_moz\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Postgraduate speakers from all disciplines are welcome to share their research at this friendly and well-established symposium.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><br type=\"_moz\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Possible topics might include, but are not limited to:<\/span><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Rituals and sacramental practices<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Representations in literature, visual and material culture and music<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Scientific (mis)understandings of life processes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Pregnancy, birth and baptism<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Family ties, ancestry and inheritance<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Courtship and marriage<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Extramarital sex and illegitimacy<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Widowhood, holy orders and the single life<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Disease, medicine and the Black Death<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Vanitas, memento mori and the Danse Macabre tradition<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Self-mortification, martyrdom and saints&#8217; cults<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Burial rites, funerary monuments and commemoration<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Areas of overlap: death in childbirth; ideas of rebirth; death and sex in the mystic tradition<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><br type=\"_moz\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"corpsTexte\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Papers should be 20 minutes in length.
