Consuming Passions engages a range of topics involving the<\/span>treatment of desire, obsession, and appetites as expressed in<\/span>texts, images, and music in the early modern period. All<\/span>conference participants will focus on issues related to France,<\/span>and many will choose to connect France in two or more<\/span>periods (medieval through the eighteenth century) and\/or to<\/span>make connections between France and other countries.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>
<\/div>\n
<\/span><\/span><\/span>Interdisciplinary in focus, the conference’s broad historical<\/span>sweep from the medieval period through the<\/span>long eighteenth century, fosters intriguing topics such as :<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>? the passions of literary, religious, and political debates;<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>? the thirst for knowledge\/discovery, including new<\/span>technologies, the assemblage of ideas from diverse<\/span>cultures in books, collections of precious objects, foreign<\/span>exploration and trade, and exoticism;<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>? the changing modes of consumerism and the resources<\/span>spent in the acquisition of luxury goods;<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>? the profound marks left by these consuming passions on<\/span>relations of gender, identity, and class;<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>? taboos, stigmata, ecstasies.<\/span><\/div>\n
<\/span>
