The study of the Medieval and Renaissance world has long been a strength at Durham, supported by some of the most important historic collections and archives world-wide. With the founding of the Institute of Medieval and Renaissance Studies (IMRS), located within our medieval UNESCO World Heritage site, and recent professorial appointments in 17th Century Studies and Medieval History, this is an internationally distinctive area of Durham’s research. One of the key aims of the IMRS is to expand its chronological and geographical purview, and these posts will help achieve this strategic goal. Applications are invited from candidates with research interests in any field of Medieval, Renaissance or Early Modern Studies who are able to demonstrate a track record of interdisciplinary work that complements, or expands, existing areas of research strength at Durham. We seek to appoint three Professors\/Readers within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.<\/span><\/div>\n

As a leading academic your primary role is within your department, although you will have very considerable freedom to undertake research at the international forefront. There is an expectation that you will take personal responsibility for developing your role, and to show excellence in leadership in working with students, your academic colleagues and the professional support staff. You are expected to engage with students and academic colleagues outside your immediate discipline through membership of a College Senior Common Room.<\/span><\/div>\n
As a senior member of staff, you will be expected to demonstrate leadership both within our University community and also externally in promoting the interests of the University.<\/span><\/div>\n
