Marie-Elisabeth Rocbert de la Morandière (Montreal, 27.7.1696-Rochefort, 1.11.1755) was the eldest daughter of the King's storekeeper Etienne Rocbert, sieur de la Morandière (1682-1753), and Elisabeth Duverger. Between 1712 and 1718, Claude-Michel Bégon de La Cour, chevalier de Saint-Louis (1683-1748), brother of the intendant and future governor of Trois-Rivières, lodged with the family. He met and fell in love with Elisabeth Rocbert. The couple braved the Bégon family's vociferous opposition and married on 16 November 1718. They had two children, Claude-Michel-Jérôme (1732-1797) and Marie-Catherine-Elisabeth (1720-1740). The marriage of a Bégon, related to the Colberts, to a young woman of vastly inferior family, caused a great scandal in the illustrious household. Elisabeth's in-laws referred to her as the Iroquois squaw. But despite being rejected by her in-laws, Elisabeth made a place for herself in colonial society. For nearly 25 years she held a salon where all the leading figures of the colony came to drink champagne, discuss politics, economics, and literature, and act out plays, particularly those of Corneille. Elisabeth, a keen letter-writer, brought up her children and grandchildren -including the girls- with the same open-minded approach. She made them read poetry, Ducerceau, Don Quixote, French and Latin dictionaries, and works of geography and French and Roman history, because, as she wrote in January 1753, she was "convinced that it cultivates the mind". In 1737, her daughter married the royal commissary Honoré-Michel de Villebois de la Rouvillière (1704-1752). She died in 1740, leaving him widowed with two small children, Honoré-Henri-Michel-Etienne and Marie-Catherine. Elisabeth traveled to Montreal to help her bereaved son-in-law with the children. Her own husband was then at sea on a mission and only returned to the colony two years later, during which time Elisabeth and her son-in-law had become very close. In 1747, the Minister for the Navy sent Villebois to New Orleans to take up a new post as financial commissary. The following year, Claude-Michel Bégon died and Elisabeth and her son-in-law began a voluminous correspondence which came to an end only when he died in December 1752. Letters dating from 12 November 1748 to 8 November 1752 have survived. In summer 1749, however, Elisabeth left Quebec for good and traveled with her father, granddaughter, and niece to France, where she settled in Rochefort. She devoted the final years of her life to building up a network of influential friends, such as the Marquis de la Galissonnière, to ensure the best possible future for her son and grandchildren. Writing was a constant and stabilizing activity during this period of her life.
Élisabeth Bégon de la Cour's letters are now preserved in the National Archives in Quebec. In 1932, after a century and a half of neglect, they were rediscovered by Claude de Bonnault in the attic of a house belonging to the countess de Rancougne, a descendant of the Bégon family. The letters are grouped in nine notebooks, the first dated 12 November 1748 and the ninth finishing on 12 April 1752. There were also some letters written on loose sheets. The correspondence obviously began prior to 12 November 1748 but no earlier letters have ever been found. The first six notebooks, written in New France, are in the form of an epistolary diary. The last four were written in France and alternate between a more conventional letter form and the epistolary diary form. 
Historians were the first to show an interest in Elisabeth's letters, but recently these have begun to arouse interest in literary scholars as well. The frequent journeys of the letter-writers between France and the colonies and the dates of the crossings -which obviously determined when the letters were sent- reflect the intensity of the epistolary exchange. Today, researchers are studying the letters from a number of points of view, including psychoanalysis, sociocriticism, and tracing networks of social influence. But the most important aspect of Elisabeth Bégon de la Cour's letters is the fact that they still have the power to delight and move their readers, 250 years after they were written.
